Hair straighteners; why must hair be completely dry?

Why must hair be completely dry before using straightening irons? Is danger of steam? Ineffectiveness of straightening? Something else?

It won't straighten as well if your hair is wet unless you use a wet-to-dry iron which simulatenously dries and straightens. I don't like them though, you have to go over every inch of your hair and if its wavy you might need to go over it twice.

When your hair is wet and you straighten it it BURNS your hair. Unless you have a special straightener that can straighten wet hair, dont do it! If you want one that can straighten wet hair go to Wal*mart, i have one from there and it was only like $25-30. =)

It will reduce the amount of heat that you need to apply to your hair and therefore reduce the risk of damage. Hair should be dry before using heated irons on it. It is adviseable in any event to apply a product to your hair that will help to protect it from heat damage. Rub the product together with the palms of your hands and then massage it evenly through the hair, paying special attention to the ends which are older and therefore more susceptible to damage and splitting.
